Introducing Coartem® Dispersible for children
Coartem® Dispersible – the first ever dispersible ACT (artemisinin-based combination treatment) specifically designed for children with uncomplicated P. falciparum malaria.
Novartis and Medicines for Malaria Venture (MMV) partnered to develop this dispersible formulation of the effective fixed-dose ACT Artemether/Lumefantrine (Coartem®).** 1,2,3,4,5
The new dispersible formulation was approved by Swissmedic, an assessing drug regulatory authority, in December 2008, following a dedicated development programme including a large phase III trial.
- The efficacy of Coartem® Dispersible is non-inferior to Coartem® given as crushed tablets6
- Coartem® Dispersible has a similar safety profile to crushed Coartem® tablets6
- Both formulations show >96% cure rates* regardless of the size of the child, based on body weight6
* 28-day polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-corrected cure rate
Coartem® Dispersible is sweet-tasting and disperses in a small amount of water – easy for caregivers to prepare and easy for sick children to take.

** Coartem® is also known under the tradename Riamet® in some countries.
